MIST

 All students in fourth grade will begin taking the MIST Writing Assessment this week. The schedule of each homeroom is listed below. The students will take the assessment with me at the computer lab in Ball Hall. Here is what I know: 

• The students will be asked to read two passages. These passages will be non-fiction, and I have a feeling they may be related to science. (This last statement is not a fact!)
• They will have to either write an opinion/argumentative piece, or they will be asked to write an explanatory piece that compares and contrasts the two pieces of work.
• Students must use evidence from the passages within their writing.
• Indenting each paragraph is a must. On the MIST portal, the tab button does not work for indenting. They have to hit the space bar.
• The portal has spell check, however it will not tell them how to correctly spell the word. It will only identify the words that are spelled incorrectly. 

We have been working heavily on this since our return from Winter Break. The students are going to do great. If you would like to work on anything at home, I suggest choosing two magazine articles or online articles that are related and non-fiction. Then have your child compare and contrast the two.
